ENG DRAWING BASICS

An engineering drawing is a type of technical drawing. It is to fully and clearly define requirements for engineered items. There are several common types of engineering drawing, such as detail, assembly and pictorial drawings.

Drawing Sheet Setup

Drawing Sheets: (Notes)
  • Engineering drawings are based on a drawing paper size of A0 (largest) down to A4 (smallest). A border is added, plus a title block which can use up a lot of space on a small (A4) sheet.
  • Australian (and international) standard projection is 3rd angle. (See Projections)
  • The Title Block contains information about the drawing, date, title, who drew it, drawing number, etc.

Drawing Types

Drawing Types: (Notes)

Common types of engineering drawings;
  • Detail drawing: Usually orthographic and fully dimensioned
  • Assembly drawing: Shows several parts together, sometimes 1 or 2 dimensions. Also exploded assembly
  • Pictorial drawing:  Oblique, isometric, perspective,
  • Layouts and diagrams: Circuits for electrical and fluid power, schematic diagrams.
Types of views:
  • Orthographic projection
  • Section view
